One of the founders of cognitive neuroscience. Observations on patients with temporal-lobe lesions and on the two memory systems (explicit and implicit) have been central to understanding the brain circuits underlying memory processes and are directly relevant to the study of Alzheimer's disease. Contributions have revolutionized modern research on memory.
