Calvert Ward Watkins

Research centers on the linguistics and the poetics of all of the earlier Indo-European languages and societies, particularly Greek, Latin and Italic, Celtic (especially Early Irish), Anatolian (especially Hittite and Luvian), Vedic Indic, and Old Iranian; on historical linguistic theory and method; and on Indo-European genetic comparative literature. Current work includes elaboration of the notion of Poetic Grammar; the interrelation of syntax and meter in Greek, Indo-Iranian, and other languages; and linguistic, cultural, and poetic resonances between Anatolia and Greece.
