Research foci over many years were in the general areas of topological groups, representation theory, ergodic theory, and operator algebras with applications to number theory. He also looked into problems arising in the group cohomology of topological groups. He developed a longterm interest in the history of mathematics and authored a book on the history of mathematics at Berkeley.
