Carl Abraham Auerbach
Carl A. Auerbach was a Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of San Diego School of Law. He taught for more than 30 years at the University of Wisconsin and at the University of Minnesota, where he served as Dean of the Law School from 1973 to 1979, before joining the USD School of Law faculty in 1985. In his writings and in his activities, Auerbach demonstrated his belief that law is an instrument of practical application, capable of shaping the social order toward a desired end. As one of the principal scholar-advocates of New Deal liberalism, he clearly influenced that redefinition. His work focused on the use of the social sciences in legal education and decision-making, and the international law of the sea, particularly laws pertaining to the exploitation of ocean resources. Auerbach served as Vice Chairman of the American Academy's Midwest Center from 1976 to 1979. In 1994 he received the American Bar Foundation's Outstanding Scholar Award for research on law and government.
