Carla Bley is an important figure in the American free jazz movement of the 1960s, perhaps best known for her jazz opera Escalator Over the Hill (1971). Her compositions have been performed and recorded by dozens of musical artists from 1958-the present. She herself is a prolific performer who has recorded extensively with her own big band and other formations, often collaborating with jazz, classical, and rock musicians. Her work has contributed greatly to the advancement of American music, and her continued pursuit of new artistic depths will further the mission of the Academy.
