Professor of Politics and Public Affairs. Scholar of political economy and comparative politics. Among the first to combine comparative politics with issues of globalization. Research topics include the origins and persistence of inequality, the social and institutional foundations of democratic stability, the political conditions underlying the emergence of various party systems and electoral institutions in advanced democracies, and the application of agent-based models to understand the formation of states. Writings include Democracy and Redistribution (2003, APSA Riker Award and SCR Dogan Award) and Political Parties, Growth, and Equality (1998, APSA Riker Award).
