Brettell's research focuses on international migration, specifically the issues of gender and personal narrative in the study of migrant experience. Much of this can be traced back to her two books We Have Already Cried Many Tears (1982) and Men Who Migrate, Women Who Wait (1986). More recently it is represented in her book "Gender and Migration" From her earlier research on migration within and from Portugal to her newest work on Indian migrants in Texas, Civic Engagements (2013), she complemented the field of migration through her focus on personal experience and everyday life.
