The Drennan group visualizes molecular processes by obtaining “snapshots” of metalloproteins in action. Drennan is known for employing state-of-art methods in X-ray crystallography and cryo–electron microscopy with other biophysical approaches to solve metalloprotein structures. Drennan is especially adept at determining structures that have eluded characterization due to issues of oxygen sensitivity or conformational flexibility. She uncovers how Nature catalyzes its most challenging of chemical reactions using the combination of metal with protein. Her research is summarized in over 160 publications and 190 Protein Data Bank submissions.
