Lord is an internationally renowned expert on autism who has developed important diagnostic tools that are now the gold standard for diagnosing autism spectrum disorders. Her diagnostic studies revolutionized autism research, because studies now include participants homogenous in diagnosis and impairment severity. Her diagnosis instruments enable identification of very young children, allowing early intervention, at 2 years instead of 5 before her contributions. She is equally renowned for her empirical findings for children with autism, including her leadership in large-scale multi-site longitudinal and intervention research that have established developmental trajectories, treatment best practices, and predictors of educational and life outcomes.
