He has studied the neuronal mechanisms of visual perception by mapping the relationship between cortical circuitry and functional architecture, showing how circuitry generates the functional properties of visual cortex and contributes to object recognition. Discovered the long-range horizontal connections in visual cortex and studied their role in the processing of visual scenes. Demonstrated the dynamic nature of adult visual cortical function, showing the influence of context, experience, behavioral task and attention.
