Craik has made many discoveries concerning the biological role of proteases and their inhibitors and use that information to understand other complex proteins. His studies have sought to understand this omnipresent class of enzymes at the molecular and atomic levels in processes ranging from viral assembly to extra cellular signaling pathways in cancer. He developed technologies to regulate and detect their activity for treatment and diagnosis of disease. He holds 15 patents, founded Catalyst Biosciences and Alaunus Biosciences, and published over 300 articles. Craik is founder and serves as the director of the Chemistry and Chemical Biology Graduate Program at the University of California San Francisco.
