He has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of how a genetic message is read and translated into a protein. Using the bacterium Escherichia coli, his group was the first to demonstrate that the nucleotide sequence of a gene specifies a colinear sequence of amino acids in its corresponding protein. He also contributed to our understanding of the mechanisms of translational suppression. He and his co-workers elucidated the features of regulation by transcription attenuation.
