Chris Chang's research focuses on the study of metals in biology and energy, with particular interest in neuroscience, metabolism, and solar-to-chemical catalysis. Chang has developed molecular imaging and proteomics technologies to enable discovery of copper as a signal for regulating neural circuitry and fat metabolism and hydrogen peroxide as an essential promoter of neural stem cell growth and neurogenesis, launching the field of transition metal signaling. Chang has created catalysts for sustainable conversion of water to hydrogen and carbon dioxide to fuels, medicines, and materials, spanning molecular catalysts to mimic enzymes and materials to integrated catalysts from molecular-materials and molecular-biological hybrids.
