British scholar of French and comparative literature. Although his intellectual center of gravity is the literature and culture of nineteenth- and twentieth-century France, his numerous publications straddle literary theory, philosophy, art history, and political history. The range of disciplinary interests reflected in his books and papers had a transformative effect on his main field of study and research. Served as general editor of the six-volume Penguin translation of A la recherche du temps perdu. His Mirages and Mad Beliefs: Proust the Skeptic was published in 2013 and an edited volume, A History of Modern French Literature 1500-2000 is forthcoming. Fellow of the British Academy and recipient of the R.H.Gapper Book Prize for his The Classic (2008).
