                    Specialist in African development, played role in developing the new field of micro-development economics, which combines theory and careful empirical work in rural villages and households. Collects original data from various African countries in order to generate and test different models of microeconomic behavior of risk sharing, credit and savings, within household relations, village political economy, and technological change in agriculture. Served as Director of Yale's Economic Growth Center and Chair of the Yale Economics Department.
