Brooklyn, New York – Founder, Former Director and Choreographer, Morphoses; Freelance Choreographer. International choreographer of contemporary ballet. Began his career as a dancer for The Royal Ballet, London, winning the Gold Medal at the Prix de Lausanne competition in 1991. In 1993, joined the New York City Ballet, becoming a soloist in 1998. There he began choreographing in 1997 and became Resident Choreographer and first Resident Artist in 2001. Works include Morphoses, Carousel, Carnival of the Animals, Liturgy, Shambards, After the Rain, Klavier, and Evenfall. In 2006, formed the Morphoses/Wheeldon Company, based in New York and London, ultimately departing from the company in 2009. Notable works are Continuum (San Francisco Ballet), Tryst (The Royal Ballet), and Swan Lake (Pennsylvania Ballet). Choreographed ballet sequences for the film Center Stage (2000) and made his Broadway debut with Sweet Smell of Success (2002). Premiered Alice's Adventures in Wonderland at The Royal Ballet, the first full-length ballet created at The Royal Ballet in more than twenty years. In 2014, he premiered another full-length ballet, Shakespearean The Winter's Tale. Wheeldon also directed Broadway adaptation of An American in Paris, which debuted in 2015 and has been nominated for twelve Tony Awards.
