His work has been the subject of more than 100 solo exhibitions including those at The Museum of Modern Art (New York); Los Angeles County Museum of Art; The Art institute of Chicago; and the Centre Georges pompidou (Centre beauborg), Paris. He has participated in more than 300 group edhibitions including Documenta 5 (1972 and 1976, Kassel, Germany); the Whitney Museum of Art Biennial Exhibition (1969, 1977, 1979, and 1991); the Venice Biennial (1993 and 1995); and the Carnegie International (1995, Pittsburgh), among others. Several retrospectives, organized by the Walker Art Center (1980, Minneapolis), the Staatliche Kunshalle (1994, Baden-Baden, Germany) and the Museum of Modern Art (1998, New York) have presented his work in several venues throughout the United States and the world. He has also received 11 honorary degrees.
