Cavanagh is the translator of nine volumes of poetry by the prominent poets Wislawa Szymborska and Adam Zagajewski, the author of two monographs including Lyric Poetry and Modern Politics (2010), and an editor and anthologist. Her work as both translator and critic has been recognized with the National Book Critics Circle Award for Criticism, the William Riley Parker Prize of the Modern Language Association, the PEN/Book of the Month Club Prize for Outstanding Literary Translation, and the AATSEEL Prize for an Outstanding Scholarly Book in Slavic Literature, among others. Her essays and translations have appeared in TLS, The New York Times Book Review, The New Republic, The New Yorker, Bookforum, Partisan Review, and Common Knowledge. Her work has been translated into Russian, Polish, Hungarian, French, Dutch, Chinese, and Japanese. She is now writing the authorized biography of Czeslaw Milosz.
