Claudia Rankine's Citizen (2014) had a tremendous impact on discussion of race in America, extraordinary for a work of poetry. Citizen undercuts still prevalent conceptions about the proper concerns of this art. She is a provocative writer who has altered her art by speaking first more to a broad national readership than to the much smaller audience for poetry. The art of poetry now looks different means something different after Rankine. Her Racial Imaginary institute at Yale is hosting research and conferences on the nature of racism and whiteness. Her earlier poetry books have redefined the nature of lyric poetry.
