Tóibín is an Irish novelist, dramatist, journalist, and essayist. His novels and short story collections, many touching on his native Ireland, include The South (1990) The Master (2004) Mothers and Sons (2006), The Empty Family (2010), Brooklyn (2010), and Nora Webster (2014). His nonfiction works include Love in a Dark Time: Gay Lives from Wilde to Almodovar (2002), Lady Gregory's Toothbrush (2002), All a Novelist Needs: Essays on Henry James (2010), and most recently On Elizabeth Bishop (2015). His The Testament of Mary (2012), was nominated for a Tony Award for Best New Play. His works have been translated into more than thirty languages, and are renowned both in the United States and abroad.~
