Craig Wilder is a prolific and versatile scholar. He has written widely about a set of important and interlinked issues in American history, over an unusually long chronological span. In addition to its contribution to historical scholarship, his prizewinning recent book about the role of slavery in the history of elite educational institutions (Ebony and Ivy, (2013)) has constituted an important intervention in current efforts to retrieve and respond to this history. This combination of historical insight and present impact also characterizes much of his other work, especially that dealing with the history of the African American experience in New York. He is as incisive orally as he is in writing, and so he has appeared in a number of documentaries focused on both history and current events.
