With doctorates in sociology and genomics, his research centers on biosocial interactions as well as stratification. His book, Being Black, Living in the Red (1999), documented the black-white wealth gap and its effects on racial disparities in well-being. The Starting Gate (2003) detailed the enduring effect of low birth weight on later life outcomes, and The Pecking Order (2004) showed how within-family inequalities influence life achievements. His current work models gene-by-environment interplay across the life course as evidenced by The Genome Factor (2017).
