Specialist in the study of the legal profession, combining survey research, interviews, historical inquiry, and economic analysis. Leading scholar of the significance, challenges, and impact of racial and demographic diversity in the domestic and international delivery of legal services. Co-authored Problems in Professional Responsibility for a Changing Profession (with Andrew Kaufman; 5th ed., 2009). Recognized for engaging teaching, voted the top teacher at Harvard Law School, receiving the Albert Sacks-Paul Freund Award for Teaching Excellence in 1998. Early in his career, clerked for Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and later served as an Associate at the law firm of Nussbaum Owen & Webster in Washington, D.C.
