I study evolutionary patterns and the processes that produce them. General areas of interest are functional, developmental, and evolutionary morphology, systematics, and geographical ecology and conservation biology of amphibians and reptiles. The focus of most of my current research is the large and diverse salamander fauna of tropical America, but I also study salamanders of western North America.  I am attempting to understand amphibian declines and disappearances, and factors responsible for these phenomena. Public outreach is primarily by means of a well-established website, AmphibiaWeb.org.
