Leading contributor to the study of transatlantic slavery. He published numerous books and articles, based on extensive work in the archives of several countries in Europe, the Americas, and Africa, dealing with the nature and magnitude of the slave trade within Africa and across the Atlantic, and with slave resistance on voyages. He has been the key developer of a major, widely utilized database of 35,000 slave voyages from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century, as well as a database of over 90,000 slaves, by name, which serves as a source to study the place of origin of African slaves.
