Playwright, Film and Theatre Director. Works include Plenty (1978), Racing Demon (1990), Stuff Happens (2004) and The Vertical Hour (2006). He is the author of 28 stage plays, 16 of which have been performed at Britain's National Theatre. Worked with the Portable Theatre Company from 1968 to 1971, where his first play, Slag, was produced. He was then Resident Dramatist at the Royal Court Theatre, London (1970-71) and the Nottingham Playhouse (1973). He co-founded the Joint Stock Theatre Company in 1975 and became Associate Director of the National Theatre in 1984. He founded a film company, Greenpoint Films, in 1982. In addition to his plays, he wrote and directed extensively for film and television, with such films as Plenty (1985), Wetherby (1985), The Hours (2002), and The Reader (2008). He was knighted in 1998 for his contributions to theater.
