Professor David Levering Lewis is the Julius Silver University Professor and Professor of History at New York University. Lewis has held teaching positions also at Rutgers University, Howard University, Morgan State University, University of California at San Diego, University of Notre Dame, University of the District of Columbia. Lewis has won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography, for the biographies of W.E.B. Du Bois in 1994 and 2001. Lewis' research focuses on comparative history with particular emphasis on twentieth-century United States social history and civil rights. His interests include nineteenth-century Africa, twentieth-century France, and Islamic Spain. Lewis is an award recipient of Bancroft Prize, Francis Parkman Prize, Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, and John Hope Franklin Award due to his works.
