Research centers on Mathematical Physics. On the physical side, he has done foundational work in equilibrium statistical mechanics, and is one of the fathers of the theory of chaos. On the mathematical side, he has worked in smooth dynamics, introducing the transfer operators and general dynamical zeta functions. Current interests centers on non-equilibrium statistical mechanics.
