Recently retired president of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. Prior to joining the Foundation in January 1993, he was, for nearly ten years, president of the nine-campus University of California. From 1964 to 1970, he served as a faculty member and vice chancellor at the University's Santa Barbara campus, and in 1971 was appointed as a vice president of the University of California. He served as the tenth president of the University of Utah from 1973 to 1983, before becoming the University of California's fifteenth president in August 1993, serving in that capacity until October 1992. Member, National Academy of Education, American Philosophical Society, National Academy of Public Administration.
