Research centers on the Renaissance tradition in the arts, through the eighteenth century, on the graphic arts, and on theory and criticism. His publications have been on the arts of Venice, with special focus on Titian, and the broader political, economic, and cultural contexts of those arts. He has written on the relationship of painting and poetry, on drawing as expression and representation, and on aspects of modernism, especially Abstract Expressionism. The foci of hiscurrent work are on the phenomenology of painting and on the idea of theater.
