Specializes in data driven historical research on the development of institutions of the state with a particular emphasis on Western Europe over the long run.  His subjects are wide-ranging: public credit, democracy, representative assemblies, forms of deliberation, central banks, education and welfare policy, and income inequality.  He also has a continuing interest in the political economy of development in Africa.
