Deborah Gray White

Deborah Gray White, Board of Governors Distinguished Professor Emerita of History at Rutgers, is an Americanist who specializes in African American and American Women’s history and is especially interested in issues of identity and the intersection of race, class, gender and sexuality.

Her publications include Telling Histories: Black Women Historians in the Ivory Tower, ed. (2008), Too Heavy A Load: Black Women in Defense of Themselves, 1894-1994 (1999), Let My People Go: African American 1800-1865 (1999), and Ar’n’t I A Woman? Female Slaves in the Plantation South (1985, 1999 [2nd ed])

She began and continues to work in the field of the history of Black women in America, universities and slavery, and digital tools for scholarship.
