Dennis R. Burton
Dennis Burton is a Professor of Immunology and Microbiology, and the James and Jessie Minor Chair in Immunology at Scripps Research. Burton's work centers on the isolation, characterization, and development of broadly neutralizing antibodies, which are immune proteins that can target numerous strains of common viruses such as coronavirus, HIV, and influenza.
He received the Bernard N. Fields Prize from Harvard Medical School and the Charles R. Shipley, Jr. Foundation, as well as two Merit Awards from the National Institutes of Health. Burton is also a fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology.
Some of Burton's pioneering work is now carried out in large consortia funded by the National Institutes of Health [Center for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Immunology-Immunogen Design (CHAVI-ID) and then the Consortium for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Development (CHAVD)] and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) Neutralizing Antibody Consortium).
He received a B.A. in Chemistry from the University of Oxford and a Ph.D. in Physical Biochemistry from Lund University.
