                    A leading German and European contemporary figure in legal and constitutional theory. In 1999 he completed a twelve-year term as a judge of the German Constitutional Court. From 2001 to 2007 he was the Director of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (Institute for Avanced Study), whose Permanent Fellow he continues to be. He teaches constitutional law at Humboldt University Berlin. Previously served as Professor of Public Law at Bielefeld University and director of its Center for Interdisciplinary Research. Numerous publications on constitutional law. Taught and lectured widely in the U.S. and U.K., Europe, Latin America, Asia. Featured speaker, Library of Congress' bicentennial conference.
