His research focused on the microscopic structure of the cells and tissues of the body. He was among the pioneers in application of the electron microscope to biomedical research and his early descriptions of the ultrastructure of the cell organelles were seminal contributions to the emerging field of Cell Biology. His electron microscope studies on cardiac muscle, liver, and the testis significantly advanced our understanding of the function of those organs. In later years, his research was redirected to Parasitology, studying host-parasite relationships in Theileriosis, a disease of cattle that has serious economic impact on the developing countries of East and Central Africa. It is anticipated that his studies on the development of sporozoites of Theileria parva in its arthropod vector, and their subsequent entry into the cells of their mammalian host will contribute to development of effective measures for control of the diease.
