Director, U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM). 1968 - 2015.  Leader in applying computer technology and artificial intelligence to the health sciences. Chaired the U.S. Government's High Performance Computing Initiative. Made contributions to information and computer activities in medical diagnosis, artificial intelligence, and educational programs. Responsible for implementing state-of-the-art digital library and its worldwide services at the NLM. Special interests in scientific data sharing, betterment of Native Americans, scientific literacy for patients, families, and the public. Recipient of numerous awards.
