Co-initiator and principal investigator of Stardust, a comet sample now returned to Earth and being analyzed. Studied the dust in the coma of comet Wild 2. Collected and analyzed interplanetary dust samples and asteroids. Studies have given a better understanding of the origins of the solar system. Also studied oxygen isotopes in deep sea spherules.
