Professor Emeritus of Microbiology and Medicine Iinfectious Diseases); Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Made fundamental contributions to the understanding of the hepatitis B virus replicative cycle and to the study of epidemiology, replication, and pathogenesis of the virus that causes Kaposi's sarcoma, one of the leading tumors in patients with AIDS. From 2011-2018, he served as Global Head of Infectious Diseases  Research at Novartis, where he led programs for the development of  antibiotics for multiresistant gram negative bacteria, as well as for novel antivirals for influenza viruses, herpesviruses, rhinoviruses and polyomaviruses
