Professor of Physics and Neurobiology. Invented the bubble chamber to detect and study the properties of elementary particles. Developed automatic systems to find genetic mutants of microbial and mammalian cells. Co-founded the biotech company Cetus, now merged with Chiron. Received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1960.
