Douglas Baird is the Harry A. Bigelow Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago. Baird received his undergraduate degree from Yale University summa cum laude and his J.D. from Stanford. He joined Chicago’s faculty in 1980 and served as its Dean from 1994 to 1999. He has been a visiting professor at Stanford, Harvard, and Yale. Baird was Vice Chair of the National Bankruptcy Conference from 1997 until 2004 and Scholar in Residence at the American College of Bankruptcy from 2009-2013. The sixth edition of his one-volume overview of U.S. bankruptcy law, Elements of Bankruptcy, appeared in 2014.  He is a leader in the field of bankruptcy law. His books, including Elements Of Bankruptcy; Cases, Problems, and Materials on Bankruptcy; and Contract Stories are used in law schools around the country. Baird is a board member of the American Law and Economics Association. From 1997 to 2005 he served as Vice-Chair of the National Bankruptcy Conference. In 2008, The Emory Bankruptcy Developments Journal awarded Baird with its Distinguished Service Award, which honors an individual who makes a sizable impact on the field of bankruptcy. Baird has been a Scholar in Residence of the American College of Bankruptcy. He also serves as a board member and treasurer of the South East Chicago Commission.
