Research has been on the immune system. He has determined how an ancient part of this system that evolved with invertebrates, innate immunity, guides the functions of the adaptive immunity, which appeared with the evolution of vertebrates. This work has contributed to an integrated view of the immune system, and may lead to the development of improved vaccines. His present research is aimed at understanding immunological memory.
