Writer of nonfiction, novel and short stories. Books include HeartSongs (1988), a short story collection, Postcards (1992), The Shipping News (1993), Accordion Crimes (1996) and the Wyoming Stories series, Close Range (1999), Bad Dirt (2004), and Fine Just the Way It Is (2008) and Barkskins (2016). Wrote the libretto for Wuorinen's opera Brokeback Mountain which debuted in Madrid in January 2014. Postcards won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction and The Shipping News won both the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the U.S. National Book Award for Fiction. Additional honors include the Dos Passos Prize and the O. Henry Prize for Short Stories, 2017 PNBWA award for Barkskins,  2018 Library of Congress Award for fiction, 2019 Montreal Blue Metropolis International Award.
