Translator and independent scholar who brought us the works of many [of the] eminent Spanish-language writers, including Gabriel García Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Mayra Montero, Julián Ríos, Carlos Fuentes, Antonio Muñoz Molina, Luis de Góngora, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, and Miguel de Cervantes—as well as significant critical work on these writers and on translation. Her translation of Don Quixote (2003) was a masterly rendering of the great work.
