He is the Chairman and former President of Liberty Mutual Holding Company, Inc., Boston, Massachusetts. Over the past decade, he has transformed Liberty Mutual group from a traditional mutual insurer focused predominately on U.S. workers' compensation into a leading global insurer. Under his leadership, the company pursued a diversification and expansion strategy, both organically and through acquisition, that has resulted in broadened product offerings and distribution platforms throughout North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Today, Liberty Mutual is the third largest property and casualty company in the United States and the sixth largest in the world. The company is ranked 84th on the Fortune 100. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Liberty Mutual, The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation, EMC Corporation, Jobs for Massachusetts, and the American Ireland Fund. He serves as a Trustee on the Board of Advisors of Boston College's Wallace Carroll School of Management, the Board of Governors for the Chief Executive Club of Boston, and the Corporate Visiting Committee for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Department of Mathematics. In September 2011, he named Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries and Member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
