Professor Gordon is an educational psychologist primarily interested in the development of black Americans, and other historically disadvantaged, students. He is widely known for his research on characterizing diverse human characteristics and pedagogical approaches that make it possible to gain traction in educating peoples with a history of disadvantage, to high levels of achievement. In this regard, he is well known for the concept of Affirmative Development of Academic Ability, and Supplementary Education, all of which focus on improving the quality of academic achievement for diverse learners. His accomplishments have brought rich nuance and subtlety to educational research and practice.~
