Montgomery became the ninth President of Western Michigan University in August of 2017. Previously, he served as Dean of Georgetown's McCourt School of Public Policy. He has had a long career as a labor economist, studying interactions between the macroeconomy and the labor market. He served as Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor in the Clinton Administration, and was a senior leader in designing and implementing the policy efforts to save the U.S. auto industry in the Obama Administration.
