Professor, and Bill & Melinda Gates Chair emeritus, in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Washington. Known for the design, implementation, and analysis of high-performance computing and communication systems, and for advancing data-intensive discovery. Public service activities have included chairing the NSF Advisory Committee for Computer and Information Science and Engineering, the DARPA Information Science & Technology Study Group, the Computing Research Association, the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee, and the Computing Community Consortium. Member of the National Academy of Engineering; member of the National Academies Committee on Science, Engineering, Medicine and Public Policy.
