Former Department Head; Morris Cohen Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT. Founding Director of the Institute of Soldier Nanotechnologies, MIT. Elucidated the complex microphases in block copolymers and exploited these to create novel patterns for nanotechnology applications. Employed level set Fourier methods and multibeam laser interference lithography to rationally design and fabricate bicontinuous structures for photonics and phononics opportunities. Founded several large centers at universities. Leadership role in undergraduate and graduate engineering education.
