Research centers on the history of early modern philosophy, from the 16th to the 18th century, with special emphasis on Descartes, Hobbes and Spinoza. For much of his career he has worked on a translation of the works of Spinoza, the first volume of which was published in 1985. Other current interests include the development of the ideal of religious toleration in the early modern period.
