Since her appointment to the Supreme Court, Elena Kagan has added a diverse viewpoint to the Court as the youngest sitting justice and the only sitting justice with no prior judicial experience, allowing for a more pragmatic approach to the law. During her time in academia at University of Chicago Law School and Harvard Law School, Kagan defended the shift to centralized policymaking in administrative law and developed a detailed analysis of governmental purpose and motive in First Amendment issues. In addition to her time as a law professor and Dean of Harvard Law School, Kagan served as the Deputy Assistant to President Clinton for Domestic Policy and Deputy Director of the Domestic Policy Council, and Solicitor General under the Obama administration prior to her nomination to the Supreme Court.
